I did so quietly since I didn't want to undermine speakers who were still committed, but I do think it's important to share cautionary info like this to avoid future troubles.
@nhoizey Thanks. I've learnt that different instances may have different styling of this. Here on my instance it currently looks like this in my timeline
@sturobson I'm a bobby dazzler.
@elliotjaystocks Oh yeah! Heady times!
It seems that these are indeed private (not to be confused with secure), but the UI on different instances do not all make this equally clear.
And @-ing a user in your DM will add them to the discussion from that post onwards.

@Robb @sturobson Innnnnnteresting
I've done some testing and exploring now.
And if you @ somebody in a DM, they get added to the conversation from that message onwards. Which I think is useful to understand.
@karin @whitep4nth3r ohhhh!
Initiating a DM is still not a confident thing for me. I can't create a new DM via the DM tab... seems that's just starting a message with and @.
Is that that you did, @karin ?
@ask Thanks!
I've learned that by mentioning somebody with @, you'll add them to the DM thread from that point on. Which is an important detail to know, I think.
@karin @whitep4nth3r Ah. Yes. You do indeed.
Some hints are there, but this does need a little more awareness in order to not make a public gaff IMO.
Knowing that @-ing someone adds them to the thread is an important detail.
@ppk I'm doing that right now. :)
And the fact you don't know about it is another good validation.
